Chalk pastel, Charcoal, Paper

This piece was made for my Advanced Drawing & Painting II class, as part of a series of self-portraits.
This is the first piece I completed. For this assignment I worked from reference photos I took and used Photoshop to manipulate the hues of each photo to explore color palettes. Within each piece, I wanted to create a different composition for each portrait to give the viewer a new perspective and alter the mood of the piece.
I chose red for my first portrait in the series to reflect the power and aggression of the first few opening moves in a chess game. I used the perspective of the opponent looking up at their adversary to speak to confidence and power.
